Qatar Scholarship /Al-Quds Bard College– A project of Al Fakhoora

EAA in collaboration with Al-Quds Bard College (AQB) in the West Bank, Palestine, provides access to quality higher education for disadvantaged youth and in-service teachers. The project supports the long-term development of Palestine’s education system and bolsters the academic system to provide transformational opportunities for the next generation. The Al-Quds Bard College for Arts and Sciences, known for its progressive models of education, is the first and only US-accredited and Palestine-accredited, dual-degree, liberal arts programme in Palestine.

The scholarship project aims to

Award 339 scholarships over the next 8 years in Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) programme at AQB. The AQB MAT, modelled after the Bard College signature MAT programme, offers dual-degrees from Bard College and Al-Quds University.
Provide undergraduate scholarships including dual degrees in the natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, and practising arts
Unlock access to a rigorous liberal arts education, student support services and civic engagement opportunities for marginalised youth and in-service teachers.

CHANGING LIVES – Lamees

Lamees Khawaja is a 26-year-old Palestinian, whose family immigrated to Saudi Arabia due to political unrest in Palestine. Her father, an Arabic teacher, passed away when Lamees was very young. The second youngest from a family of seven, Lamees loved the English language. When the family returned to Palestine 10 years back, she completed her undergraduate degree in English Language and Literature, from Al-Quds University. After graduation, she initially worked as a translator and interpreter and then started working as an English teacher. Lamees’s passion for learning and her desire to continue her post graduate studies never ceased. Unable to pay for her studies, she applied for the Qatar Scholarship and was one of the first batch of 119 students who were awarded a scholarship in the Master of Arts in Teaching.

The scholarship will help me get better work opportunities in the teaching sector and it will help me to build a healthier generation of well-educated individuals, who I believe will benefit from the experience I will gain from studying in this programme. Teachers are the builders of the future generation. Our country suffers from lack of freedom, but education can free the mind. Education can be the relief and cure from the limitations that Palestinians suffer from. As a teacher, I will help my students to become open-minded, express their own desires, and explore paths they wish to seek.

CHANGING LIVES – Fouad

Fouad Al Natsheh is a Qatar Scholarship recipient at Al Quds Bard College pursuing a Master of Arts in Teaching. He works as an English language teacher at the Hebron Industrial Secondary School in his hometown. After completing his B.A. in English Language and Literature back in 2013, Fouad started working as a teacher. Fouad wanted to continue his study with a master’s degree, so when he heard about the scholarships at Al Quds- Bard College, he seized the opportunity and applied for it. The scholarship has increased his prospects as a teacher and has rekindled his ambition to acquire more knowledge in teaching methodologies and has provided him with new experiences and skills that he can pass on in the classroom to his students.

Being an in-service teacher, I can implement my learnings directly into the classroom and to my students. I dream to make education more accessible and smoother in Palestinian schools. There are many things to be changed to get well-educated school students, like the old traditional teaching methods, the tools used and even the evaluation system.
