EAA in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), expanded its Qatar
Scholarship in Gaza to award a further 630 youth with the holistic higher education scholarship.
The Qatar Scholarship programme not only provides students with access to higher education but
also provides them with student services and an inspirational civic engagement programme.
Through a multi-faceted approach, the project provides some of the most marginalised youth in
Gaza with an opportunity to unlock their full potential, enabling them to play a key role in
rebuilding their communities. By providing comprehensive support to beneficiaries throughout
their journey, from selection to graduation, the project enables and empowers youth to become
engaged, productive, inspirational civic- minded members of their communities, who can adapt and
excel in their challenging environments.
The main components of the project are:
Quality Education- Providing access to quality, relevant education through domestic scholarships
addressing current and projected labour market needs.
Student Affairs – Access to comprehensive support services, including psychosocial support, and
contribute to students’ academic success and overall wellbeing.
Civic Engagement - A comprehensive, multistage curriculum providing students with 21st century
skills, social emotional learning competencies, enabling them to become inspirational civic
minded citizens who actively work towards the betterment of their communities.

CHANGING LIVES – Badr
Badr Alzaharna, a Qatar scholarship recipient, and aspiring
novelist, graduated from Al Azhaar University of Gaza with a BA in English Language and Teaching
methods. When Badr was a child, his father was sadly rendered disabled following an accident at
work. The financial insecurities and the growing instability of living in Gaza made him unsure
of ever continuing to higher education, however the Qatar Scholarship programme provided him
with the opportunity to complete his undergraduate degree.
As part of the scholarship Badr also completed a three-year civic engagement programme, that is
designed to inspire students to become changemakers who initiate and implement social
enterprises for the benefit of others in their community. After completing Level 2 of the civic
engagement programme, ‘The Art of Dialogue and Facilitation’, Badr along with other Qatar
scholarship students, worked together on designing and implementing the first-of-its-kind
student-led conference titled ‘INSPIRE: hearts, minds, action’ in Gaza. The aim of the
conference was to discuss issues in the field of education, as well as to share students’
personal journeys in becoming active agents of change in their communities.
Badr also attended a one-month intensive summer course at Indiana University’s Kelly School of
Business, winning the Coca-Cola Scholarship Program funded by the US Department of State,
becoming the youngest winner from the MENA region.
In 2021, Badr was selected as one of six Qatar Scholarship students to design and develop an
interactive panel, ‘A New Generation: Reclaiming our Future in a Post-Pandemic World’, for the
World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE) in Doha. The panel was a huge success and
highlighted the unique skills Qatar Scholarship recipients had acquired through the civic
engagement programme, sharing the impact of their initiatives in their local communities and how
their pay-it-forward attitude has inspired their peers to do the same.
Badr was also invited to attend the Generation Amazing (GA) Youth Festival the following week,
and after attending numerous workshops and meetings with GA team members, he impressed them so
much that they offered him the opportunity to be a GA Youth Advocate for 2022.
I have exponentially grown as a youth leader and a professional employee because of the splendid
opportunities I have been given during the Qatar Scholarships programme

CHANGING LIVES – Athar
Athar Ahmed was born in the Nuseirat refugee camp, Gaza, and faced
many financial challenges growing up. Realising that education was the only way out of poverty,
she applied for the Qatar Scholarship programme and was successfully awarded the scholarship
which allowed her to complete a BA in English Language and Literature, and graduate with high
distinction. Athar completed all three levels of the unique civic engagement programme provided
by the scholarship,
a programme designed to provide students with 21st century skills and social emotional learning
spheres needed to become positive civic minded individuals who actively work towards the
betterment of their communities. She was also selected to take part in the WISE 2019 Summit in
Qatar, where she designed and delivered an interactive panel with her peers from Gaza and Syria.
The session ‘A New Generation: Reclaiming our Future in a post-pandemic World’, showcased the
ambition, resilience, and adaptability of marginalised youth across the MENA region affected by
conflict. It also highlighted the unique skills Qatar Scholarship students had acquired through
Al Fakhoora’s civic engagement programme.
The Qatar Scholarships programme is a journey of personal and professional growth that did not
end with graduation. Thanks to Al Fakhoora, I can get into labour markets easily; it is a credit
on my CV that qualifies me to high-profile jobs. I have a dream to become an effective woman in
my community and help the youth secure a better future. By completing a master’s degree in
entrepreneurship, I can lead many to success.
