Zambia Open Community Schools – A project of Educate a Child (EAC), supported by Educate a Child International (EACI)

There are approximately 495,000 out-of-school primary-aged children in Zambia. In rural areas, around 23% of primary-aged children are out-of-school. Some of the challenges to education in these areas include poverty, early marriage, gender discrimination, long distance to schools, and lack of facilities for special needs. EACI is contributing to the EAA co-funded Zambia Open Community Schools project to enrol 175,000 OOSC throughout the country.

CHANGING LIVES – Nasilele

Nasilele’s parents did not encourage school attendance for any of their seven children. In fact, when she was 10, her parents struggled to provide the basics for their children. She stopped going to school to help her married older sister Nosiku with her children. Nasilele was given another chance at education when Zambia Open Community Schools persuaded Nosiku to support and encourage Nasilele to enrol.

I will encourage her to go to school and make sure she does not stop or get married early like I was. We have seen the lives of other young women get better because of education,” said Nosiku.
