The Gambella Region in Ethiopia has many OOSC and refugees. Barriers to education include refugee status, forced marriage, lack of school infrastructure, child labour and poor education quality. EAA is supporting Save the Children to enrol OOSC, both refugees and from the local community. The main strategies include training and mentoring teachers to enhance literacy and numeracy instruction in lower grades and the primary-secondary cycle. There is also provision of educational materials for the most needy OOSC, development and distribution of reading materials in the mother tongue of beneficiaries, improvement of school infrastructure including WASH facilities and gender-segregated latrines. The engagement of communities and parents will also be enhanced.
